MADE TO BREAK U.S.

ZINE publication

Made to Break U.S. is a digital zine that examines the ongoing violence, fear, and systemic
oppression faced by immigrant communities in the United States, with a particular focus on the
actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The project uses digital
storytelling, design, and written narratives to document the realities of life under a system that
often targets people of color, children, and families. Through the zine, the experiences of those
affected are centered, humanized, and amplified, moving beyond statistics to reveal the
emotional and social consequences of aggressive immigration enforcement.

The zine highlights the escalation of ICE’s power and reach, including raids, detentions, and the removal of protections for “sensitive locations” such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship. It explores how these policies disrupt communities, creating fear that prevents children from attending school, discourages families from seeking medical care, and isolates neighborhoods. By combining visuals, typography, and personal accounts, the zine reflects both systemic structures and the lived experiences of those impacted.

Made to Break U.S. is designed to inform and raise awareness about the realities of aggressive immigration enforcement. It serves as both a creative exploration and a social commentary, showing how digital art can document injustice, provoke conversation, and build empathy. Through the zine, viewers are invited to witness the impact of ICE policies on immigrant communities and to confront the fear, trauma, and systemic oppression that have become normalized. Ultimately, the project is a platform to challenge oppressive systems and highlight the resilience and humanity of those affected, using art to educate, engage, and spark meaningful reflection.
