Fast Fashion at What Cost?

“Why be simple when you can be stunning?” – Onika Tanya Maraj
ARTIST STATEMENT
Jordan White, from Houston, Texas, aspires to become a successful 3D artist. Her passion for art began at the age of five when Jordan taught herself how to draw cartoons, and it expanded into painting during high school. Over the years, Jordan has explored other creative outlets such as fashion and modeling, embracing the idea of being authentically artistic in multiple forms. Her interest in graphic design emerged during her sophomore year of college, which later sparked curiosity about motion graphics production in junior year. Jordan finds it fascinating to create characters and environments from scratch—starting with just a single cube and a compelling story—to bring ideas to life in movies, short films, and other visual media. The endless possibilities within digital art continue to inspire Jordan as she refines her craft and push creative boundaries.
THESIS STATEMENT
We create unhealthy living by throwing away unwanted clothes without realizing this can cause more significant pollution to our ecosystem. Ninety percent of fast fashion is being manufactured globally. However, fast-fashioned clothing and textiles negatively impact our environment as they are responsible for the heavy industrial water pollution caused by dyes and pesticides. It also exposes humans to eight to ten percent of global carbon dioxide yearly.
For my project, I tested different software mediums and modeling techniques to create a 3D animated short film campaign that raises awareness of fast fashion. This includes aspects of making a 3D animated short film: storyboard, animatic, modeling/rigging, animation, and sound design. I started by researching fast fashion and surveyed potential target audiences through surveys and focus groups, which helped to steer the project in the most appropriate direction. I created a short script and sketched a storyboard for the film. Afterward, I developed my character and how I wanted the environment to be viewed. I then began the 3D developing stages, going through the most common 3D programs: Maya, Blender, Zbrush, Unreal, and Houdini. I have also investigated some AI websites such as Mixamo and Rokoko to find quicker ways to rig and animate. Lastly, I combined all the assets into Blender and Unreal to find out which program would render faster using low-high poly models and essentially bring my story to life.
To conclude this project, I developed a brand system to distinguish this campaign from similar efforts and created an infographic poster that highlights facts on fast fashion’s effects on our society.
